umm, a family that plays together…

uke.jpg

The UPS woman brought them yesterday. A loud knock and by the time I got to the door, the truck had departed and these two ukuleles remained. I had initially ordered one, you know, so the kid would be well rounded and exposed to music and all that.

And then I thought, how unfun is that. So I ordered a second, within the hour. They are here now and already we are one uke short. Three people must have three ukuleles. Fortunately the First Act Discovery FG404 Soprano Ukulele is less than $25 a pop.

Aside from the fact that the Guinness Book of World Records purportedly declares the ukulele to be the easiest instrument in the world to play, Pinapple Pete’s Uke School may be the most lovely and amazing site for getting started with a new uke.  Who knew that a person could go from zero to Rocket Man in just a few short hours!

house cleaning

appErrors I haven’t been playing blog lately because I’m being all trendy and building a facebook application instead. Every free hour and a few of the hours usually allocated to sleep have been usurped in alignment with my new high calling: php, mySql, fmbl, and fql with a bit of pain in the area of mock-Ajax mixed in. I’ve never coded in any of these ‘languages’ before, but they seem close enough to actionscript that I’m generally surviving. That, and I have a cookbook. I’m realizing that I have more O’Reilly cookbooks than food cookbooks. Ungood for my domestic life, but a distinct sense of rightness regardless.

I’m making a *super fabulous* app for WOWIO, and should the code gods smile upon me, I should see the light of alpha in a week or so. But the step I need to take now, now, now is cleaning house. I have a big mess of code that does a few things well, but takes a million years to run because I have ‘required-once’ d all my favorite scripts everywhere, and with all this extra code facebook is consistently chocking on parsing the whole damn thing. So instead of making new charming functions, today will be dedicated to making all things tidy without breaking anything along the way.

If I was a better person, I might have tidied along the way, but this is the mess of learning how and making at the same time. I love my new hobby, and like cooking much prefer cleaning my code to cleaning my house.
